Sending me Demo's

As the label gathers a bit of awareness the amount of demo submissions I'm getting is creeping up - which is fantastic and very exciting, but it also brings with it a need to manage the process a little, so I've pulled together a 'standard' response to the emails. So, I thought I'd post it online here so I can direct people to it and help us both get what we want!

Thanks for reaching out to UM Records.

I'm always keen to hear new and exciting new music, and try and listen to all demo's as soon as I can (this may take a week or more).

The label is primarily a deep house label, so please bear this in mind when sending tracks over for consideration.

All EP's will feature two original tracks, so sending over a single track isn't going to work, so think about a pairing, how they compliment each other and work as an EP before sending me the following:

When sending tracks for consideration please follow these simple guides:

1: If you're in doubt whether your tracks are right for the UM Records catalogue spend some time and listen to the previous releases here http://soundcloud.com/um-records

2: Send me private links via Soundcloud (or similar provider) so that I can stream online (if I want to get a download after hearing it I'll be in touch)

3: Give me a little info on you - any releases you've had previously, labels you've feature on (if any) etc

4: Don’t send tracks that have already been available for free download. I'm looking for fresh new music that has yet to be heard - that way the excitement is there for everyone

5: Send finished tracks. Or at least tracks that are 90% finished - I need to get a good feel for the tracks- UM Records manages it's own mastering - so final mixdowns are perfect

6: Avoid sending out mass demos - if you're sending it to 50 other labels, I'm unlikely to be interested in the track and there's a chance you've not really thought about whether UM Records is the best place for the release (see No.1)

7: If the track uses samples you will be personally responsible for clearing them and supplying me with clearance at a later stage - think about that now to save us all the aggro later

8: Be Patient! The amount of prog house, hard house techno jibber jack, dubstep, jackin house and other music I get means it might take me a while to come back to you - but I will! If you're going to chase me up - give me a few days at least! ;)

HouseRiders are a production based duo from Montreal, Canada. They are quickly gaining a name for themselves with releases on labels such as iRecords, Soul Industries, Cromarti Records, Aenaria Music, DeepWit Recordings and of course my own UM Records.

The duo are Brice Martin-Spelle (aka Deep Spelle) and Jeff Fontaine. According to their own press info; "Brice brings a lot of energy, excitement and passion while Jeff focuses more on the technical side, each adding a balance to the other which manifests itself in their outstanding tracks".

After two years of working together they have developed a sound that has quickly made the pair a fans favourite, with their deep, organic sounds. Their optimistic view of life and united love of music, they've found working together is often more like two kids building sandcastles in the sun – a passion that shines through in their music and mixes.

As many of you will know, Jesus Pablo is a UK-based DJ/Producer/Remixer/Fashion Designer (it keeps him busy!), not to mention a born and bred scouser from Liverpool who chose a very Spanish alias, Jesus Pablo - as you do! Those of you that follow UM will also know he's something of a regular on shows over the last year or so with his releases, remixes and more recently releases on his own label, Something Different. After all that it was about time he got round to doing a guest mix!

"Music should make you dance, smile and think all at the same time, so that's what I intend to do. Appreciate the DJ and the music and the rest will follow, you will begin to see how they worked together."

I've decided to be original and make a mixtape of what I'd play in a club while gigging - not just fill it with promos, exclusives and all my own material trying to be cool and upfront. I'd like to think I was a real DJ, one who will take you on a journey for the mind, body and soul.

UM update

As those of you that have followed UM since the early days of fanzines and podcasts, and even those of you that hooked up when I finally took the plunge into social media will know the show has always been about the music.

The 'concept' has always been to showcase the best new music (or at least the tunes I've been enjoying the most) and help promote them to fellow music lovers. Now the thing is, as we all become more and more engaged in social media and increasing numbers of labels and artists become used to using the likes of Facebook , Soundcloud, Twitter and the like, the hum of promotion is creating a cut through problem all of it's own.

I got to thinking about the shows recently, the format, the way in which it works from my end of things, the process I have, the time I have and everything else in between (yes I like a good ponder). And came to some conclusions that it was time to adapt to this new world order and give UM some new life in order for it to continue to be as successful as it has to date.

The result of this head scratching is that from mid November onwards the UM shows will be shorter - around an hour or so in length. That means rather than 20-23 tracks per week I'll be selecting 10-12, making it harder for releases to get included and therefore more valued by the listeners as the tunes to look out for.

The other positives of such a move is that downloading to mobile devices will be easier and less bulky, and yes people can fit it on a CD if they still do that rather than plug their pod in? But, like I've always said, the idea is to help sell the tunes, so the 128kbps will still be used to protect the actually releases profitability.

The result of this change will obviously impact on the radio stations currently broadcasting the shows, and hopefully they be able to continue to support the shows. But given the scale of Soundcloud followers coupled with both the untitledmusic and Deep House fans pages the direct audience is growing at more than 50 people a day - and that, amongst the mass promotion we're seeing across social networks has to be a the focus - listeners are opting into these groups, based on the music they get to hear and UM's shows are part of that package.

Change isn't always welcomed by everyone, and I know a shorter format won't please everyone - I'm keen to hear people's views on these things (as always) so leave a comment or get in touch.

DJ and promoter Deeka hails from Italy and has 18 years under his belt behind the DJ booth. His passion for house music has been inspired by the likes of Tony Humphries, Frankie Knuckles, Deep Dish, Claudio Coccoluto, Junior Jack and Masters at Work, shaping his deep funky soulful sound.

With plans to develop his own productions soon it's a pleasure to be able to introduce yet another local talent from right here in the home of UM, Wellington, New Zealand.

Interview: Jaidene Veda

As with life, house music is cyclical, and after the computer produced boom it's delightful to once more here vocals delivered with passion and feeling once more reaching out across the world. Few voices have the power to captivate and stop you dead on the dance floor, but Jaidene Veda is one such shining light of vocal beauty. It just so happens she's also the voice behind 'Sunday' one of my all time favourite house tunes and a previous 'If I could listen to one last tune' feature (here).

After three co-written and self-produced indie albums, two Billboard club singles, and several international chart topping EP's Jaidene Veda has become a recognizable voice in both the underground house community and top 40 club circuits around the world. Often described as "Bjork meets Sade", UK's 'Kula Records' recently dubbed her a "modern day Tracey Thorn". There's no doubt anyone who hears Jaidene's sultry, glowing vocals will be hypnotized by them, so it's with great excitement that I'm able to do a feature on such a talent as she unveils her latest indie project, 'Pisces Pendulum Anniversary Remix LP'.

Her path to this point has been marked by her drive to succeed and littered with big names, kicking off with the 'Flow' EP remixed by Pete Heller and one time Pete Tong 'Essential Buzz Chart' selection. Three indie albums including, 'Pisces Pendulum' (a compilation of deep house singles as well as Down Tempo, Lounge, Nu Jazz, Spoken Word and Neo Soul) caught the ears of DJ Spinna, Danny Krivit, Ralf Gum, and the likes of Bugz in the Attic, receiving international radio support including Pacha and Global Ibiza.

There's very little about the woman behind the voice out there. How did it all begin for you?

My mother said i was singing before i was talking - I'm not sure if that's just a story she likes to tell me but i love hearing it! I was trained on the piano, I played guitar, I sang informally, but I was a sub-pop baby - music lover very early, passionate grunge artists and poets inspired me!

Then Bjork and trip hop threw my world, Sade and Me-Shell Nedgeocello molded me eventually, but when my big brother (DJ at the time) introduced me to house music, I "knew" what I wanted to do.

It was Blue Six 'Sweeter Love', the dance floor was so hypnotized, and this lush but anonymous voice was weaving in and out of the dance floor. Aya's voice was in my head for hours after the club. I was 17 and very impressionable, but I knew I wanted to be that voice on a record not even in the room, but so everyone could feel you. And of course the 4/4 was like your heartbeat, I've felt it ever since.

You've been to some wonderful places as an artist since those early days, which of them will stay with you forever?

Ooh! hard to pick. New York will always be my favorite place in the world I think. However, the European stint with 'Pisces Pendulum' allowed me to make London my home for almost two months and it was a thrill, just like Paris - but I was able to visit my Fathers family in the Czech Republic for the first time - so Prague feels like the most memorable.

Having collaborated with many of the industries finest, including Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell, Josh Milan, Glenn Underground, Jimpster, Reelsoul and the Ananda Project, her body of work has continued to bring her closer to working with all of the artists who inspired her early in her career. 2010 ended with a two-month touring/recording stint across Europe, spanning several areas of Britain, as well as Paris and Prague where the collaboration with Peng/The Rurals legend Andy Compton was born that gave us the Ocean.

How did the collaboration 'Ocean' with Andy Compton (The Rurals) come about?

I'll preface this with the fact I've been a Rurals fan for ages, I can remember singing 'That Feeling' at gigs when I was 18 and not that comfortable freestyling, ha! Eleonora from Stilnovo was a big part of 'Pisces Pendulum' and my first show in Europe was her big birthday bash in London, just by coincidence Andy saw the performance pics, he said he peeped my music on Myspace and Youtube after that, and it made him call Eleonora to see if I was still in the UK - what a blessing - we ended up in studio for a whole month together after that, completely unplanned and feeling like inspiration full circle! Big love for Andy, what a musician at heart. 'Into Life' is a gem to me, but his mix of 'Soul Size Love' was a lovely cupid cut for the album!

And this latest Pisces Pendulum Remix Anniversary album?

Essentially, I'm celebrating the anniversary of my mini European tour back in the Fall of 2010. However, performing with Pisces Pendulum overseas led to more of a recording stint for me and various new connections to people that were all so enthusiastic about the project. That's how all of these remixes came about, as well as an opportunity for me to create something that felt like an album, not the compilation it stemmed from. I wanted to experiment more and enjoy the growth in my sound and studio skills, going way off the 4/4. I would say half the project is soul and nu-jazz, there’s even a rendition we stripped down to solely the piano and me - real music!

'Sunday' is one of those tracks that stands out from your tunes for me - how big a tune was it for you?

It's really special to me, that's for sure. Sunday on the dance floor is where this whole journey started. Osaze and I wrote that track in 2004 or something though, so the long journey to the SA and UK (MN2S) releases, then the monster remix by Jimpster (absolute fave mix on the floor!) coming years after! Well I'm lucky. It was something that resonated with people, but I knew it would - there's an entire global community dancing religiously on Sunday nights, look at Shelter too, right? I really wanted to sing about it, but I'm so happy people feel it.

Those lyrics are 'sung back to me' the most, it's so moving to share that with people... what I've done on this album is produced an "Ode to Sunday", so i actually feature four of my singer sisters all hitting an original approach to the acappella, then I designed the story from home to New York to Chicago (with the help of Thomas Osaze and Vick Lavender). There's a deep tribute to the Pioneers of the scene on that piece that we're all really proud of!

To date Jaidene's featured on Jaiveda Productions (her own label), Sacred Rhythm Music, Peng, Nordic Trax, mn2s, Soul Candi, Amenti, Adaptation, Curvve Recordings and more. An award winning Filmmaker and Sound Designer, Jaidene (an Audio Engineering grad from the Vancouver Film School) was recognized at several International Graduate Film Festivals, for 'Outstanding Video-making Achievement', as well as nominations for 'Best Experimental' and 'Best Original Music', for her debut short film in 2005. Tell us about Jaiveda Productions?

I'm just a little indie mama who likes to do it all i guess, so when I was making records, or producing shows, projects, films... I just threw a title on it and it stuck. I think people think I run a record label, it makes me giggle (and blush;).

How much importance do you put on the social media promotion these days?

Again, I'm just an indie chic. This e-world we're in is what it is, and that means it's everything! Promoting the original 'Pisces Pendulum' was pretty much purely Facebook, I've only recently linked with Twitter, and Myspace is dead - sad to say it cuz it felt like a really genuine connection to your listeners - peeps were very enthusiastic about sharing music and providing feedback.

The mushroom effect seemed to really be there. but I'm a pretty mad promo monkey, self promo is awkward as hell but I had to do it from day one and really it's so much more rewarding connecting face to face or at least somehow directly with your audience. I used to see Tiesto footage of my early dance singles with thousands of people going off at some European gig, but I never felt that as much as people calling or writing to me to tell me they just made love to my album, or fell asleep to it - it's not the compliments you seek, it's the connections. We're human and artists need reciprocity. Social networking is a GEM in that manner.

What labels or artists are you looking out for in the year ahead?

I have a huge soft spot for producers who are not afraid to sing. MR.V killed that jam! So did Reelsoul - their production is heavy too. Choklate had some sexy numbers on the floor all summer, but I'm proud of my girl, Hosanna Littlebird, for resonating so much soul simultaneous to sultry in all she's doing - people associate us with each other (music and our friendship) but she is truly a unique woman - watch out!

Otherwise I think we all couldn't be more impressed by everything Josh Milan touches of late, 'Soul Size Love' finally coming out with my big brother in the biz meant the world to me, but I'm grateful to be inspired by his vision with Honeycomb and how deeply he is involved on all levels. On a much smaller scale I see our parallels but I can learn from him on every level of the business - seeing that you can do it all, wear all the hats you want, touch all the genres you want, build a musical family.

But most importantly, we may be in love with this thing called house - but we are music lovers first! With the abundance of labels, artists and constant releases in the underground now you have to dig, but soul music lives, and the giant souls behind all of it are always the most humble people I meet, those are the artists and labels that will preserve the integrity of house music because they are the real musicians.

Back to the UM Guest Mix series with a first for us! In a landscape all too often dominated by big names and male ego's it's a great pleasure for me to finally be able to introduce a female DJ. It's also possibly the first tech house mix we've had on the series - see it's not all deep house round these parts!

Selen Parman is a Turkish ex-pat who recently moved to Europe to Australia. Her interest in DJ'ing started (like so most DJs) at very early age.

Her journey since has seen her DJ at the Club Crystal stage located by the amazing Bosphorus in Istanbul where she has played alongside international names like Terry Francis, Asad Rizvi, Lee Burridge, Hipp-E and more. In 2006 she secured a residency at Café Del Mar (Bodrum, Turkey)

Selen has played guest spots at parties such as Lost Baggage, We Love Sounds After Party,Chinese Laundry, Thank Techno It’s Friday, Monkey Tennis, Church of Techno and Spice since moving to Sydney and has spent the last year refining her sound and
honing her craft. She is a lover of all house and techno, from deep and warm to crunchy and dark. More recently she has been running TEAM Records.

Interview: Kevin McKay (Glasgow Underground)

Back in the early 90's, when untitledmusic was starting out as an ad-hok fanzine dotted around the finer record stores of the UK, it was thanks to some great people with amazing labels that UM is still alive and kicking. Sadly, all too many of them have fallen away over the years as the industry changed and the digital era made it a very different business. One such person was Kevin McKay who owned Glasgow Underground, one of many outstanding labels that believed in what we were doing and kept the promo's coming our way. Just like us, he vanished for a little while, but is back with a bang, new music, re-edits and lots more.

So, I thought, as part catch up for old times and part education to the newer groovers I'd fire a few questions at the man that introduced me to Mateo and Matos, Neon Heights, Jersey Street, LHK, DJQ, Alex Moran, Rick Preston and so many more - I have my house education to thank this guy for. So, ladies and gentlemen, I give you Kevin McKay....

What came first for you, your own music or Glasgow Underground?
I started DJing properly - playing house/club music as opposed to just playing dance/pop records at friends parties - in 1989 and soon afterwards I became fascinated with the idea of making music. I kept having these ideas about how to improve and push forward the current club sound. You know, wondering if tracks would sound better if they were done a certain way or imagining a current house record modulated with a certain style to come up with something new. At the time even basic samplers cost thousands of pounds. Combine that with my serious vinyl habit and there was no chance of me saving up for a studio setup. Then one night I was DJing at Strathclyde University Students Union when a guy from my course came up to me, handed me a tape and said, "I really love the music you play and want to make stuff that sounds like it. Here's what I do." That was in 1991. We spent the next 3 years hanging out in various Glasgow clubs and then going back to either my place or Andy's to try and create our own version of what we'd just heard on the dance-floor. The idea of turning it into a business didn't come until much later. I couldn't get anyone in Glasgow to sign our first EP so I went to the Princes' Trust and got a grant/loan of £2000 to put it out myself.

As Muzique Tropique you and Andy Carrick paved the way for some many other UK indie dance labels - was it all as glamorous as it seems?
I guess working in the music business is as pleasurable now as it was then: you still get to go to work every day doing something you love. The main difference back then was that there were more barriers to entry (studio equipment costs, manufacturing/distribution know how, no email/web marketing solutions, etc) and so it took much more initial effort to get a label off the ground. That made having that business seem more otherworldly than it does now. However the reality of being in that situation was and still is a mixture of experiences. When you are stuck in the office with your head in excel spreadsheets doing royalty statements or combing through licensing contracts the job can seem as dry as any other office work but when you're playing a track you've made on a boat sailing down the fjords outside Oslo to a bunch of loved-up Norwegians going bonkers on a sun-kissed boat party… it's bloody awesome.

You're also the man that owns Breastfed Recordings and brought us all Mylo. Was that success down to the lessons learnt on GU or just one of those things?
It's funny because at the time I discovered Mylo, house music (and deep house in particular) was considered as unfashionable as you could get by the British music media. So much so that at the start of Breastfed I took on a pseudonym (Kevin Kennedy) because my name was inextricably linked to Glasgow Underground (a deep house label - shock! horror!) and house music in general. That meant I could contact people without them automatically pigeon-holing Mylo as "deep house". I even went as far as using the same pseudonym for all my production and mixing credits on the Mylo records (heaven forbid someone that made deep house co-produced & mixed this new exciting stuff). So in some ways, Mylo had nothing to do with Glasgow Underground but in others, his success had everything to do with it. For example, Breastfed was started with very little money so we used Glasgow Underground's credit with suppliers to get our vinyl and Cd's made, we used GU's sway with distributors to get a distribution deal and we used all my experience with pluggers to pick the right team to work on the project. Without all that it would have been almost impossible for us to have achieved what we did with Mylo on our own without licensing on to a bigger label at some point. Of course we partnered up with other labels but all the releases were done under the Breastfed brand and we retained ownership of all of our copyrights.

As if all that's not enough you're behind the Heartbeats imprint too - what's the deal with that?
Grum is one of the most talented artists I've ever met. When I signed him I wanted him to have his own label so that he could develop his own style (both musically and visually) without being surrounded by other acts. He started off making "electro" but it would have been wrong for him to be on a label surrounded by other "electro" artists as his skills and range of influences were always going to mean that he would outgrow one particular sound. And Heartbeats is the perfect name for what he does too. Every time I hear a new Grum tune, it gets me right there in the middle of my chest where it counts...

Glasgow Underground was/is one of those legendary labels from the late 90's/early 00's, what happened in 2004 to make you stop releasing music?
Our distributor went bust owing us around £40,000. We had just enough funds to cope with that kind of loss but it was going to take a significant new investment to get the label back up and running. At the time Breastfed had been going for about 18 months and I decided to commit all my time to that. As well as running the label, I mixed all the Mylo tracks that we released on Breastfed, co-produced 1/2 of the album and programmed/produced all of the Linus Loves material so there wasn't much time for Glasgow Underground. I did put out a 12" in 2006 and one in 2007 I did keep my hand in… kind of!

With so many releases under your belt (115 12"'s and 38 albums if Discogs is right?) what were the highlights of GU for you?
The Romanthony album is an obvious highlight, "Bring U Up" especially. He is one of those incredibly talented but also incredibly confusing artists. Working with him was certainly entertaining! The early releases also mean a lot to me as I was involved in the production; Muzique Tropique, Sixteen Souls, Studio Blue. And then my favourites from a DJing point of view have to be Powder Productions and Mateo and Matos.

So why after 7 years is now the time to bring the label back?
I think there's a real appetite again for house music and that has inspired me to do it. I didn't see the point in just making the catalogue available digitally so we're planning a series of compilations that showcase what we did in the 90s/00s and how it is relevant to people that like labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Rejected, Hot Natured or Visionquest today.

With the likes of Paper, Classic Music Company, Shaboom, Toko and UTC soon to make their comebacks I'm interested to know whether it's an artistic decision or a financial one for you?
It's definitely an artistic decision. When I was working on Mylo records or Linus Loves records, I was really into that sound and Breastfed was the perfect label for them. I took some time out after that to produce a band because that was what I wanted to do then and now I'm really excited by house music again and what better platform to express that than on Glasgow Underground. Asking my favourite producers from around the world to remix the back catalogue and compiling exciting compilations out of it is just an added bonus!

Will their be any new vinyl releases for GU to add to those precious collections around the world?
Vinyl is still a very important part of being a dance label so we're going to still do it. I'm just still working out the best way for us to do it given that the market for it is so much smaller than it used to be.

How do you think the current marketplace, with digital technologies and social networks have changed the record label business?
It has made it much easier to have a record label and therefore it has made becoming noticed as one harder. That seems to mean that it takes a little longer for the really strong stuff to rise to the top, which is not necessarily a bad thing...

What other labels and artists have you been enjoying of late or tipping for big things in the near future?
Rob Etherson from Glasgow is a producer people should look out for. He makes tech-house as one half of Ovr Kill and has a release forthcoming on Kling Klong, he makes bass/house as one half of Mia Dora and has just turned the new Roots Manuva single into a slice of Julio Bashmore-meets-Eats Everything deepness and, as Rob Etherson, his mix of Mash's "Somebody's Property" was one of Pleasurekraft's bombs of last year.

What can we expect to hear from you personally and the label over the coming months?
The first new signing to GU is a producer from LA called Small Pyramids. His debut ep "Another Way To Feel" was released free on the net last year. It was blogged by the likes of Disco Delicious, Nightdrive & Too Many Sebastians and its stand-out track "I Want Blood" found its way into the playlists of Bxentric and Radio 1's Jaymo. We've just promo'd some cool remixes of "I Want Blood" by Cosmic Kids and Goldroom and they're getting great reactions from the deeper djs. He's working on an album for the label just now.

As for me, I've just done a track for the debut release on Moscow's Propaganda label (named after the club of the same name) which will be out as part of a compilation with other favourite djs/producers of the club such as Yapacc, Touane, John Tejada, Peter Kruder, Maya Jane Coles & Clara Moto. That's out in October/November, as will my remix of the Grum track "Power" and there'll be a new ep on GU before the end of the year and possibly an album next year.

UM presents: Miami Ice

At the age of twelve Markus Greulich (aka Miami Ice) started to play the drums which helped him develop his love and feel for rhythm and percussion sounds. After a few years the young German took things to the next level and started to practice mixing and producing.

2007 saw his first release on the italian digital label Stranamente Music released and in 2008 two releases followed on Onward Digital before Markus was asked by Pole Folder to do a remix for his new 80Hz Digital label.

He's since featured on Endemic Digital and Unrivaled Music and this year worked with the UK based Pretty Criminals on 'Feel The Crowd' - supported by the likes of M.A.N.D.Y, Moodymanc, Tom Findlay (Groove Armada) and many more. It also entered the Beatport Top 100 Deep House Charts at No.53 and was picked for Beatport´s 10 Must Hear Deephouse Tracks.

It's fair to say 2011 has been a very good year for Markus with projects to come with great artists like Acid Andee, Colin C. (as MICC) and many more.

Exciting new label UM Records announces itself to the world with a stellar line up for its debut release. Marvin Zeyss' 'In Arms EP' contains two original deep house tracks plus two sparkling remixes – Giom adds a splash of his trademark bounce to ‘In My Arms’ while Kev Obrien and Chris Luzz provide some strutting techy edges to round off the New Zealand’s labels first EP in fine style.

Marvin's EP here follows impressive releases on a host of deep house labels which has seen the young German's brand of deep and techy house take off, especially since the release of the 'Next To You' on Brown Eyed Boys featuring a Maya Jane Coles remix hit the streets.

Nuremberg resident Zeyss has had releases on labels such as Modifi Grooves, Disclosure Project, Nightchild Recordings, 1 Trax, Brown Eyed Boys, iRecords and many more since his first release in 2010. He describes his style as a combination of “uncommonly deep and techy”.

Remixes comes from French house DJ and master producer Giom whose work on Lost My Dog, Amenti and OM needs no introduction and NYC duo Kev Obrien and Chris Luzz. Kev is the man behind the Stranjjur imprint, whilst Luzz (a regular cohort of Obrien's) has releases forthcoming on Loco and Cromarti to add to previously releases on Fresh Meat and others.

New Zealand's UM Records is the latest project from untitledmusic, the deep house ‘brand’ that encompasses a blog, a worldwide weekly radio show on eNation, Deepvibes, Live1.fm and Westradio, and the largest deep house fan group on Facebook. Future releases from the label will see Deep Spelle, David Alvarado, Halo Citydeep, Brian Ffar, Andre Detoxx, Santi Touch, Alvaro Hylander, HouseRiders, Marc Cotterell and more join the label.

The UM Guest Mix Series bounces back with Matt Gray a house music obsessor with releases on Elite Records and Re:Tweak.

Matt's got a remix forthcoming on Lost My Dog and planned releases on Tim Sheridans VeryVeryWrongIndeed, with whom he's also currently working as a studio engineer and as part of his band Limited Love Orchestra. He's making waves on the club scene with monthly residencies at two very good venues in London - Bar Vinyl and The Shoreditch, along with a string of guest appearances at various other bars, clubs and parties around the UK and Ibiza.

A classically (and jazz) trained musician turned house and techno aficionado, he draws inspiration from an extremely wide range of musical forms. His productions are an unique blend of deep, grooving underground house (and sometimes shades of techno) music, influenced heavily by the early the 90’s sounds of Chicago, Detroit and the acid house movement, with the occasional nod towards disco, funk, dub and even the odd jazz solo thrown in, harking back to his rich and varied musical education.

His DJ sets are also testament to the diversity of his musical background. He regularly plays six-hour marathon sessions, taking the audience on a journey from down-tempo funk and disco vibes through to house and sometimes to more techno orientated sounds when the time is right. It is through this that he has gained the ability to be able to come on as a guest DJ at any time of the day or night, and captivate a crowd of party people, keeping them grooving until any time of the day or night, with his beloved house music being the dominant underlying force.

Long overdue I know, but finally the Guest Mix series is graced by a Kiwi DJ and someone I've had the pleasure of DJ'ing with too! One of Wellington's pre-eminent DJ's and house purveyor of the highest order... ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I give you Dilby.

Here's what Dilby says about himself... "Dilby’s original productions champion a signature groove and illustrate a level of attention to detail that is instrumental in everything he does. His tunes are dance floor grooves that take inspiration from the early house and techno sounds of Detroit and Chicago, give a nod to synth pop and salute their tribal influences all combined and presented using modern production techniques. This creative output takes the form of up-front, modern house and techno that sounds cutting edge, while paying homage to its roots.

Dilby’s sound has been gaining support from the international DJ fraternity. His tracks have been supported by the taste-makers of house music including Richie Hawtin, Danny Tenaglia, Nic Fancuilli, Carl Cox, Mark Knight, Stacey Pullen, Juan Sanchez, Flavio Diaz, Hermanez, Ray Okpara, Oliver Klein, Roger Sanchez, Thomas Penton, Ryan Halifax, DCUP ("we no speak Americano"), Johnny Fiasco, Joel Armstrong, Omid 16b, Spesh, Gavyn Maytell, Sasha le Monnier, SKLA, Raymundo Rodriguez, Deepchild, Rob Small and many more."

The latest exclusive guest mix see's one of my home town favourites grace the series. Hailing from the industrial landscape of Teesside in North East England (UK), Hall North rose to notoriety on his remix of Harvey Mckay's '69' which was released to rave reviews on respected Glasgow label, Soma Records in 2010.

Since then Hall's had several releases/remixes released on labels such as Fade, Celestial, Endemic, Sounds of Juan and We Continue (Digital) and remixed the likes of Andry Nalin, Chris Fortier and Saytek.
His productions have found their way into the sets of DJs as diverse John Digweed, Timo Maas, Roger Sanchez, Satoshi Tomiie, Groove Armada, Stacey Pullen, Sander Kleinenberg, Paul Loraine and Chloe Harris to mention just a few. His DJ sets have featured on such radio stations as Ibiza Sonica, Capture FM and Innervisions and his tracks/remixes have been played on Transitions (John Digweed) and Ministry of Sound radio. With more releases on Cubism, Endemic, Celestial and 26 Tea Drops imminent, and positive feedback flooding in from a whole host of impressive industry names, the future is looking very promising for this rising star!

Jack Fell Down's a collaboration of anonymity. Anonymity is directly related to the concept of obscurantism or pseudonymity, where an artist or group attempts to remain anonymous, for various reasons, not limited to: adding an element of mystique to themselves and/or their work, attempting to avoid what is known as the "cult of personality" or hero worship, where the charisma, good looks, wealth and/or other unrelated or mildly related aspects of the person(s) is the main reason for interest in their work, rather than the work itself. We continue the UM Guest Mix Series with the first vinyl mix and an all-star tracklisting from DJ Kadabra (aka Dustin Kadabra Kinney) hailing from Austin Texas.

Dustin has been playing quality house music since ‘99. He's a host and producer of the The House Hookup, a weekly podcast on iTunes, featuring quality house music from the best DJ's in Texas and beyond as well as a writer and record reviewer for Chicago’s 5 Magazine.

Locals will also know his from his involvement with Zoobeats Collective and G3-Entertainment and Deck Support – broadcast on 89.9FM KTSW in San Marcos, Texas.

I love this music. Let me just say that first of all! And I have for as long as I had pocket money to own it. In the years since it's changed beyond recognition and now the internet serves as ring master for most of my musical exposure, access and more. But, and I'm hoping this isn't just me, we all get a bit jaded by it all.

And that's how I've felt this week, and I suddenly realised I'm doing the very thing I hate - bombarding everyone with links, links and more links, and if I'm honest, a little too often they're pointing people to this blog. So, sorry fellow deep house lovers. With the arrival of the Guest Mix series I may have overdone it these last few weeks? Something I'll fix over the next few weeks by pulling back a little on activity and focusing on the core things that make untitledmusic what it is. Hot on the heels of Frank Kruse's guest mix comes Poland's Andre Detoxx, a DJ/Producer I've long been a fan of and am proud to say will feature on one of the forthcoming UM Records releases!

Andre Detoxx started out in 1997 as the hose of the 'The GrooveBar Radioshow' on Poland's biggest internet radio station www.houseradio.pl. More recently he turned his focus to his own productions, and has rapidly built a name for his deep, drifting and emotive sounds, signing releases to labels such as Disclosure Project, DeepWit Records, Pesto, Tanztone, SoundBar and coming later this year his first EP on my own UM Records (umrecords).

You'll all be delighted to know that here in the Southern Hemisphere we've passed through the longest day of year! so it's all eyes on the approaching summer for me, whilst so many get stuck into Ibiza, Sonar and all manner of exciting things like partying on yachts and getting a tan I'll be plotting and planning for an exciting second half to the year... get ready!

Vinyl Heaven: OFF Recordings

Not so long ago I was able to purchase a pair of second hand Technics 1210's after being without proper decks for about 4 years, and so I've gained a renewed passion for the slices of vinyl we (or at least some of us) grew up on. A time when piracy was as common as worrying about Beatport charts and if your midi mapping was doing everything you want it to!

What I've found is, that if you scratch the surface of the on what seems a digital marketplace you soon find a whole host of labels doing limited, low key vinyl releases, from Baker Street, to Home Audio and one of my personal favourites OFF Recordings.

To celebrate 2.5 years of and 25 releases Andre Crom's label are unleashing a triple vinyl, double CD and digital compilation with contributions from established OFF acts like Crom and Dawson, Einzelkind, Nima Gorji, Chris Carrier, DJ W!LD, Huxley, Thyladomid or Luca Doobie alongside newer names to the label such as David August, Tuccillo, Varoslav vs. Werner Niedermeier, Robytek, Alejandro Mosso and more - it's an almighty line up!

Not to mention a club tour all over Europe and beyond. Personally I think it's great to see a label going for it, and really pushing the quality of their sound on vinyl, and triple vinyl at that!

After getting deep into classic house in the late 90's, OFF-founder Andre Crom decided to go back to his roots with his own label. So in December 2008 OFF Recordings was born and within 2.5 years became one of the most popular labels for contemporary house music with an old school touch.

While most Berlin-based labels stand for a more minimal/techno-ish sound, OFF has consistently stood for house in its purest shape. Its sound merges elements from jazz, funk, soul, blues, disco and techno with 90's influenced house to create a unique mix, aimed directly at the dance floor.

The labels name “OFF” is all part of the label's philosophy - being open to all kinds of influences, not having flashy artwork, but a reduced and serious presentation. It also stands for an uncompromising focus on the club and dance floor. Step on the floor, lose your mind and get OFF.

OFF have produced vinyl releases for all of their releases to date, demonstrating that there's a market for it, and in fact if recent research in the USA is right, it's a growing market with vinyl sales increasing 14% last year whilst CD sales dropped 20% for the fourth year running.

The guys at OFF told me they saw OFF004 as a break through for the label, especially the DJ W!LD remix, establishing the label as one to watch. Since then releases such as Thyladomid's 'The Voice' with it's awesome vocal sample, and 'Gonna Be Alright' by Martin Dawson and Andre Crom have really taken the world by storm. A personal favourite of Andre's is Chris Carrier remix of 'Snakes' by Luca Doobie and Andre.

So where too from here? Well, the club tour taking in places such as Watergate, Privilege, Cookies (Berlin) and Chaca Chaca (Munich) and promotion of the album aside look out for more great releases and remixes from the likes of Nhan Solo and Daniel Dexter, Ian Pooley, Ekkohaus, Homework, Martin Dawson, Andre Crom.

So here we go, the first in the brand new series of guest mixes comes courtesy of Frank Kruse (Germany). Influenced by John Digweed, Timo Maas and Carl Cox he began mixing at the age of 20. Since then he's played across Germnay including on Sunshine Live, the most successful dance music radio station in Germany, developing a deep sound touching on tech house and moodier deep house tracks, as he does here in his UM Guest Mix.

Frank is a driving force in his hometown of Osanbruck, where as a promoter he's behind some of the highest quality parties alongside DJ's such as Santos, Tigerskin, Santé and many more. He's currently working on his debut single too, due out toward the end of 2011.

UM Guest Mix Series

As long-term followers of UM will know I've had a very irregular guest mix series going on and off for a couple of years and have been graced with mixes from LowerCaseSounds, Lost My Dog, Baker Street, Marvin Zeyss. 3am and Artizan Music - wow, that really isn't many come to think of it - must do better!

Which is why I've been mulling over changing things to be more about you! So, from here on I've decided to open it up to all of the emerging DJ's and established artsits alike, in fact anyone that just wants to share their style with everyone else, get some feedback and keep the world spinning.

Now before the flood gates open and I get a pile of download links to all sorts of progressive house or god forbid dubstep mixes I'm going to lay down some simple rules for your mixes, and to spare everyone getting in a huff post them here for all to check out.

To be chosen as a guest mix your set must be:

• Exclusive to UM for 1 month from the date of posting
• Be of deep house or tech house music - I'll name and shame you if it's not! I will!
• Between 1 hour and 1.5 hours long and of good quality (sound and technique)
• Have a full tracklisting

Simple basic rules that'll make life easier for all of us, but wait there's more... to allow me to gauge if they fit the UM concept I'll also be needing:

• A link to listen online (saving me downloading everyone's first)
• A link to download if you're successful
• A press photo of you (600x600 pixels)
• A brief bio on you (100 words max)
• A list of links where people can check out more (Facebook, Soundcloud etc)

Each week, fortnight or month (depending on how it goes) I'll showcase a new guest mixer on the blog and on the Deep House fans site, meaning over 33,000 people have a chance to hear you play - can't be bad!

Not every week can be full on and glorious, sometime you need the quieter one's to get back on top of your game and focus on the next push! That's been the story of the last week with me catching up on a load of things I needed to sort.

Things are quickly taking shape over at UM Records with the first release now looking like mid-August - I'm looking forward to kicking off the promotional campaign for Marc's EP with remixes from Brian Ffar and Halo Citydeep!

Also been working on a few new features for the blog - you'd be amazed how keen people are to get the publicity but how slowly things move when you're needing something from them. When I grew up I never wanted to be a pirate

For a long time now I've been working away on a post about music piracy, a balanced approach looking at all sides of the argument, from artists and labels to music lovers and fans and all the way to retail stores, promotion companies and back. It's a slow road and at some point I'll throw up what I've written and just put it out there for debate.

The problem is the further I get into it, the more convinced I am that everyone has just accepted it exists and resigned themselves to it, just doing all they can to prevent it, but from the moment it's out in the public domain (for sale if you're lucky) you've little more than a few hours before it appears on blogs across the world.

Don't get me wrong there's a fiercely active campaign to combat it from certain quarters, and slow, meaningless progress from ISP's/Governments, not to mention the age old argument that it doesn't hurt anyone really. Which I disagree with, with a passion in case you were in any doubt of my standpoint.

Which kind of brings me to the reason for this rant. Last weekend, whilst sorting out music for this weeks UM show and generally arsing around on the net as I do regularly, I got a message from a label I have high regard for. I get a lot of requests to post links on the Deep House fans page, some I do, some I don't, but this was the second request from this label and as the page is all about quality music then it fitted the bill. The last time they been in touch about posting a link I'd asked if they had a promo list and if they would be prepared add me to it, as a way of helping promote them even more - it's a two way street after all!

The story goes that they don't have a promo list (like many other labels don't and I can appreciate that given the exposure to piracy it can create if you're database isn't made up of people you can trust 100%). Anyway, we agreed that as a thank you I'd be slipped the next promo and we'd all be happy - superb, deal done!

Stay with me here, I know I ramble!

So, early Saturday morning I get another request to post a link. And, because I never give up I remind the fella about our deal. And good to his word we hop onto Skype and over comes the promo - very nice too, thanks! And it's here where my world got turned upside down... why? Because I was asked to swap files I might have in the other direction.

I'm sure plenty of DJ mates do it, and we know there's plenty of 'music lovers' doing it right now, but even by my low moral standards a label owner, who doesn't operate a promo list for presumably piracy concerns, is now asking to benefit from the piracy!

I was, to put it bluntly, 'fucking shocked'! In turn it threw me into a spin about the feature itself, I mean who am I trying to kid if the problem runs so deep? My polite reply to the request was this "I'm just going to be straight, I don't share files with anyone, not even my wife, too many labels and artists trust me with their music and I'm all about helping it sell. sorry"

To which, to give label owner X his dues he said OK and went about his business. Now, I've um'd and arghh'd about whether to even mention this for a few days now, and well, sod it, it's out there now, off my chest and into your heads.

Is the fight against piracy over as a result, no! Is the feature I'm working on dead? No! But, I've got some serious thinking to do of my own ahead of UM Records' first launch and how we approach promotions!
