Daniel Ray - Down South EP - Oh So Coy Recordings

Daniel Ray - Down South EP - Oh So Coy Recordings
Released: Traxsource 23rd June / General 30th June

Daniel Ray returns to Oh So Coy for his 2nd solo outing on Matt Prehn’s label. Once again it’s emotive moody stuff from Daniel, Owls In Reverb is the kind of tunes I could happily sit back, by a pool ideally, with a beer and just drift away to! Beautiful. The title track is a little etcher, but still retains that feel of dark, sticky moodiness. But Owls has it for me!

Vincenzo de Robertis - Everywhere I Go - Deep Site Space

Vincenzo de Robertis - Everywhere I Go - Deep Site Space
Release: Jun 23 2014

Vincenzo de Robertis becomes Deep Site Spaces 14th release with remixes from Terry Vernixx, Funtom Dub and Deepologic. The original is a powering, jazzy kind of thing, dark and moody with a little vocal ditty. Terry Vernixx takes it more into my world, cooling down the dense sound yet maintaining the intensity - kind of like Kevin Yost in an angry mood springs to mind. The Funtom Dub and Deepologic remixes are decent enough, but nothing new. Terry’s takes the honours!

Bourne - Fake Illusions EP - Ready Mix Records

Bourne - Fake Illusions EP - Ready Mix Records
Released: June 16th 2014 (Beatport Exclusive). June 30th 2014 (Worldwide)

Bourne back on Ready Mix with a truly moody, melodic and dubby EP. The opening two originals build on top of each other it seems, starting out really minimal and ambient then rising with beats and snares in After A Rainy Night. Then we drop into the remixes from BDTom and BiG AL. Again it’s like a progression – BDTom’s lifting the mood a little before BiG AL goes all late night retro moods and takes us on some street light fuelled journey around a Miami Vice set - it really is what it made me think of! Then we go back to another original with Fake Illusions – this one really did nothing for me. Rounding things off comes Yigit Atilla restoring the order and coolness with a nice moody remix again, perfect for a late night wander!

BiG AL and Yigit doing it - really enjoyed the seeming progression of tracks in the first four, like a chill out set lifting me back up to the dancefloor.

Purple Velvet - Never Knew - Manucci’s Mistress

Purple Velvet - Never Knew - Manucci’s Mistress
Released: 16.06.14

'Purple Velvet' is the alias of production duo Chris Crowther and Lee Dearn. Each of whom have carved out a production career in their own right, Chris is better known for his 'Coat of Arms' moniker and Lee has released under his own name and has a forthcoming release on big poppa Scccucci's label as 'B Moe'. Three tracks on show here, the title track being a bright yet dreamy little affair, tripping along with key stabs and a vocal flutter. Always is simply great. Old school Chicago moods, a building atmosphere of cool, with vocals and rhodes layering to rich effect. Finishing on a high with High, more retro moods to this one, dreamy, lazy, sun-kissed mellow deepness.

Chagos - First Time We Met - Deep Pressure Music

Chagos - First Time We Met - Deep Pressure Music
Released: 12.06.14

Deep Pressure’s latest comes from South Africa’s Changos and is a beautiful soulful vocal house EP in the classic mould. Jazzy hints, vocals to fall in love with. Both opening tracks Queen of the Palace and You So Magical are just wonderful. Naked Music would be happy to have them. My pick is the latter and I’m not going to mention the third track, so not to spoil a stunning EP.

Danny Hartley & Rob Small - Down & Out - What Happens

Danny Hartley & Rob Small - Down & Out - What Happens
Released: 02.06.14

Leeds based producers Danny Hartley and Rob Small team up for a three track EP on Tim Andresen’s What Happens. Danny takes it alone on the opening two tracks - Down & Out being a lo-slung retro kinda groove and Suffy’s Poem having a dreamy edge - neither really got me excited, just a bit lack in punch for me. Howver, Rod Small joins in the fun alongside Danny on the closing track, Unspoken Violence and we get this dark, trance inducing sharp sound that captivates with it’s intense dramatic under current.

Usmev ft Bleu Renee - Twilight Room - Bogota Records

Usmev ft Bleu Renee - Twilight Room - Bogota Records
Released: 02.06.14

Barcelona's Usmev combines with Bleu Renee on the Twilight Room EP with remixes coming from JT Donaldson, Chuck Love and Slammer. The title track has a steady mid-tempo with soulful vocal touches and resonating pads. JT Donaldson’s remix gets it up a bit more with added energy and a touch of funk while the other remixes offer little for me to get excited about, although I suspect the Slammer Remix will have a lot of appeal with its speedier tempo and drum frenzy.

Ruyman Mas - More Kings EP - Oh So Coy Recordings

Ruyman Mas - More Kings EP - Oh So Coy Recordings
Released: 02.06.14

Ruyman Mas returns to Oh So Coy in 2014 with a blinding 4 track EP of atmospheric techy bassline and tingling grooves. The title track is perhaps the most likely for me to play with a rumbling bassline that struts it’s way through a dirty little hook or two. Probably more suited to easy home listening or as part of a set building on soundscapes than heading for the dance floor. Oh So Coy certainly keep us on our toes of late!

Raw District ft Ladybird - Those Lies - Brique Rouge

Raw District ft Ladybird - Those Lies - Brique Rouge
Released: 06.14

Raw District is Belgian duo Vernon Bara and Massimo DaCosta and they have released music on labels such as OM Records, AMA Rec, Robsoul, Aroma, OFF and more. Ladybird has of course more recently been working with Andy Compton but perhaps better known for her vocals on Llorca's song My Precious Thing. And i should/have to mention this is the first release of the new Brique Rouge - after being tied up in distro collapses and the catalogue being in limbo. Welcome back old friend!

Anyway - Nacho Marco and Duriez supply the remixes with Marco’s being the pick of the pack for me, fusing Ladybird’s soulful house vocals with a subtle acid deepness. Duriez goes very acid on his remixes too with the Dub being all out acid heaven. The original is tasty too!
